State Love Letter — April

Wow… we underestimated Oregon’s love for donuts.  We didn’t think anyone but New York could make us feel self-conscious about our decision for best donut shop, but the great state of Oregon is definitely making a case for that title.  There are a plethora of great options, but due to its wacky and daring stance on flavor combinations, we chose Voodoo Donuts as our favorite!  Yeah, you can play it safe with their signature voodoo doll doughnut, which is shaped like a doll, has raspberry filling and is accompanied by a pretzel stick so you can stab your voodoo doll (we told you that we picked the weird one), but where is the fun in that?  Take the road less traveled and go for the grape ape doughnut which is sprinkled with grape Kool-Aid powder or go for the Arnold Palmer doughnut that has vanilla frosting topped with powdered lemonade and iced tea.  Weird, right?  In their early days, Voodoo Doughnuts also offered a NyQuil-glazed doughnut and a Pepto-glazed doughnut garnished with crushed Tums. The most interesting part is that they didn't stop making them because of a lack of demand. They stopped making them only because health officials stepped in and shut it down. Who knew medicinally-garnished donuts would be a problem? Weird.

Revolutions evoke change.  One revolution underway is the meteoric rise of the artisan donut.  What was once just a simple treat has turned into a full blown culinary experience.  One of the donut shops leading that charge is Revolution Doughnuts in Decatur, Georgia.  From their fresh peach slider donut to their orange pistachio donut, this confectionary mecca's menu will recruit your taste buds and convince them to join in on the revolution.  Don’t worry, vegans.  You weren’t forgotten!  You can be part of the revolution as well as this donut shop offers a wide variety of vegan options.  Revolution Doughnuts also serves organically-grown and responsibly-sourced coffee from Cafe Campesino Coffee. The perfect pairing for such high level pastry options!

S’mores donut.  Cotton candy donut.  Chicken.  Cappuccino donut.  One of these things is not like the other.  One of these things doesn’t belong.  However… Mike’s Donuts and Chicken has thrown caution to the wind and grabbed the sweet and savory bull by the horns.  Located in Kenosha, Wisconsin, this place has something for literally everyone!  Chicken biscuit sandwich?  They have it.  Thin Mint donut?  They have it.  Full wet bar?  They have it!  What this place doesn’t have is an antacid dispenser and after not being able to stop eating all of the delicious offerings this place is pumping out, you just may need it!

Want to talk about a daunting task?  Finding what we think to be the best donut shop in New York.  Holy moly.  Where to start?  It seems like every street has a donut shop in this state, especially in Manhattan.  However, we are troopers and regardless of the people we anger with our selection, our winner is… The Doughnut Project!  Located in the West Village and armed with a full-fledged delivery service and some of the most interesting flavor combinations we’ve ever seen, this place is constantly pushing the limits.  Anyone care for a prosciutto, pear and olive oil doughnut?  How about a PB&J doughnut?  Seriously, though, the latter one is worth trying. These amped up flavors are not for the faint of heart, but don’t let fear hold you back!  These guys know how to bring the flavor without losing the simplicity of a normal doughnut.  All the more reason to get there super early because this place wouldn’t sell out every day if they weren’t any good.
